1965 Volvo Amazon 122S Rally Car


The Volvo Amazon has been a much-loved car around the world since it’s debut in 1958. As a rally car it came into it’s own in 1962 with the introduction of the 1.8 liter B18 engine. Later versions, such as the ’67 123 GT and the ’69 122S with 2.0 liter B20 engine, cemented it’s place in the rallying world with its pace, reliability, and predictable handling. 

We didn’t go looking for our Amazon, it found us. While driving at Brian Redman’s Targa 66 a friend of the car’s then owner noticed we were having a good time driving a ’67 Amazon we’d rented from VRS, Vintage Racing Services. In a vintage racing paddock everyone is either taking about the car they want to buy or the car they want to sell. It was a fortuitous connection for us.

Our ’65 Volvo 122S race car was originally built to race La Carrera in 2011. It ran and finished, piloted by Roger Sullivan. We purchased the car from Sam Nelson at Nelson Engines in Georgia in March of 2017. Sam had built and maintained the car’s current rally-tuned B20 engine. 


With the help of VRS, we’ve spent the last year improving the car. Which, of course, is a never-ending process. Having already passed La Carrera’s scrutineering, we felt confident with the car’s safety systems. The work we’ve done includes updating the suspension, electrical, instrumentation, fuel system, and cooling systems. With the mechanical updates nearly done, we’re now focused on gathering up the necessary spare parts for our La Carrera run in October 2018.
